  5. It's 30 miles. You would do 6 times 5 to get 30 and they both go into 30. So they'll see each other in 30 miles.

  8. It would take 2 hours for them to meet up.
What I did was I used ratios in order to compare the times. They started at two different distances. They continued until it was equivalent. Therefore it took two hours for a traveling of 120 miles total.

  9. It would take about 2 hours because 6 x 12 is 120 and 50 x 2.4 is 120. So it take about 2 hours to meet each other.

They will meet after two hours. I know this because the Smiths were in the lead of 20 miles and the Jones in 0. After 1 hour the Smiths were at 70 miles because 20+50=70 and the Jones at 60 miles. After another hour the Smiths were at 120 miles because 70+50=120 and the Jones were at 120 miles because 60+60=120.

It would take 2 hours for the Jones family to catch up to the Smiths. I found my answer by making a list by hour for each family and comparing the distance apart. For example they are 20 miles apart now so i thought that since their rates are different per hour that they will eventually meet up. After one hour of travling the Jones's went 60 mph and the Smiths's went 50 mph. After 2 hours of travling the Jones's family was 120 miles and the Smiths's were at 100 miiles. They are now 20 miles closer than they were before so they have caught up to the Smiths. So the time must be 2 hours.
